Auxiliary brake lights

On our Georgia trip last month we visited Southern Powersports in Chattanooga. They have a display Goldwing with about $10K worth of accessories on it. Most of the chrome stuff I didn't care for but one item that did catch my eye was the Kuryakyn passenger armrest trim. These are chrome pieces with running/brake lights built into them.

They don't make a set of these to fit my year and like I said I'm not a big chrome guy so I decided to do something similar with just the lights. The first issue I faced was finding lights that would fit the small space. Ideally it would be nice to find a running/brake light of some sort. The problem was that these type of lights were huge and wouldn't fit. I wanted LED lights for the low current draw. One day Levi, one of the guys on the fire department, posted a picture on Facebook of a fire truck he had installed lights on. He had used small LED lights for flashers. I'm going to connect the brakelight wires to run in tandem with the center-mounted brake light so I had to remove the inner trunklid trim to get to the wiring.

The speaker pods come off easily. There are three screws on the bottom that are obvious and these two under the trunklid trim that aren't.

The top of the pod comes off with a tug. Now would be a good time for that speaker upgrade.

The lights come with gaskets which made it easy to mark the mounting holes. The mark in the middle of nowhere is for the cable.

I ran the wires behind the passenger seat.

I mounted the lights with stainless #6 x 3/4" screws I got at Lowes.

I was pleasantly surprised to find the cables would not need lengthening.

I used a terminal strip to connect the wires and the flasher for the center-mounted brake light. I ended up having to run the gray cables behind the passenger seat and through the holes (marked with yellow arrows) and move the terminal strip up because they got in the way of installing the inner trunklid.

My initial plan was to power the auxiliary lights from the center mounted brake light flasher. However, the auxiliary lights draw 0.5 amps each and the current draw of the three lights combined would exceed the flasher's rating. The LED3 lights have about 30 programmable flash patterns so I wired them together and chose a pattern that is noticeable but hopefully not too annoying for someone behind me at a stoplight.

I left the programming wire available in case I want to change the pattern.

I put a strip of reflective vinyl over the center of the lights to soften them some. Video of the lights.
